Bruins banish Satans

Fargo South bounced back from a tough loss on Tuesday night in Jamestown and won an important 2 point game at home against Devils Lake on Thursday beating the Satans 54-40. The Bruins led the entire game with leads ranging from six points to the game ending 14 points. South jumped out in front early thanks to some easy baskets by both Jessica Trautwein and Katie Luecke. The Bruins complemented their good offensive effort with another solid defensive effort, their fourth straight solid defensive game, holding the Satans to only 15 first half points. Devils Lake went to a zone midway through the half, but the Bruins answered with a nice freethrow jumper by Luecke and an easy flash basket by Trautwein to counter the Satan move. The Bruins expanded their quarter lead and took a 25-15 lead into the halftime locker room. The Bruins and Satans played relatively even through the third period where freshman Christa Salzwedel knocked down a couple of midrange shots and junior Mandy Rice nailed a three pointer in the closing seconds of the half. The Bruins couldn't quite close the door on Devils Lake though, and the Satans pulled to within five points midway through the final period. South was able to keep the Satans at bay from the line though with Christa Salzwedel and Katie Luecke going two for two, Micaela Kruckenberg going 3 for 4, and Alicia Calkins making 1 of 2, but putting the nail in the coffin by getting her own rebound and putting the put back shot in. With the win the Bruins move to 6-4 in the EDC. Next action for South is next Tuesday when they host the #2 ranked team in the state Red River Rough Riders in another 2 point game.
