Bruins take the Knights


Fargo South bounced back from a tough loss on the road on Tuesday by taking care of business on Thursday in a dominating 48-31 road victory over the Grand Forks Central Knights. After a tightly played first quarter,the Bruins jumped out on top early in the second period and never looked back. The Bruins put the clamps down on defense as only one Knight player made a field goal after the first quarter. South held the Knights without a field goal in the second quarter and managed scoring from four different players in the quarter to open up a three point lead at halftime. Mandy Rice sparked the run with 3 transition baskets in the first half. Once again though, the Bruins relied on their inside game for scoring, with senior Katie Luecke throwing in 15 points and sophomore Jessica Trautwein scoring a game high 19 points. Luecke scored 10 of her points in the decisive third quarter when the Bruins pushed their lead to 12 points at 36-24. The Bruins then extended that lead to 40-24 to start the fourth quarter and they were never seriously threatened again. The Bruins dominated the boards, giving up only 3 offensive rebounds for the entire game, easily a season best. Alicia Calkins also helped the Bruins cause with a solid floor game - 7 rebounds, 8 steals, and 6 assists - all team highs. With the win, the Bruins improve to 9-6 in the EDC. Next action is Tuesday night when the Bruins host the Jamestown Blue Jays.
