Spoilers live up to their name

The Grafton Spoilers lived up to their name on Tuesday night, upsetting the Fargo South Bruins 40-36 in the Grafton gym. The Spoilers jumped out to a quick 4-1 lead, and led the game from start to finish, although the Bruins made it close at the end. The Bruins couldn't seem to get into a flow on offense and stuggled putting points on the board all night. Part of that was due to 25 turnovers in the game, limiting the scoring chances the Bruins had. On the defensive side, the Bruins did a good job of making the Spoilers take difficult shots, but Grafton crashed their offensive boards hard and scored many of their points on second or third efforts. In the first half alone in which South trailed by 2 points at half, the Bruins committed 12 turnovers and gave up 11 offensive rebounds. Again, the post play for South was solid, with both Katie Luecke and Jessica Trautwein scoring in double figures with 10 each. Alicia Calkins led the Bruins with 11 rebounds. In a game which saw the Spoilers take a 36-28 lead midway through the fourth quarter, the Bruins were able to battle back in the late stages of the game. Trailing by three points late in the game at 37-34, Luecke put in an offensive rebound basket to cut the lead to 37-36 with just under 30 seconds to go. South fouled Grafton, who made one of two free throws and made the score 38-36. The Bruins ran their offense and got a three point shot attempt by Christa Salzwedel that was halfway down before it spun out with just over 10 seconds left. South fouled on the scramble for the rebound and the Spoilers made both freethrows to push the lead to four - South never got off another shot. With the loss the Bruins fall to 8-6 in the EDC and drop to fourth place. Next action for South is Thursday night when they travel to Grand Forks to take on the Central Knights.
