North declaws South

Fargo North came out firing on all cylinders Tuesday night and the Bruins couldn't withstand the initial charge and took a tough 58-34 loss to their crosstown rivals. The Bruins held their own early on as Mandy Rice hit a three pointer to give the Bruins a 3-2 lead, but it would be the only lead South would enjoy all night. After playing the first 5 minutes close, trailing only 11-7, the Bruins would find themselves on the wrong end of a 14-0 run that pushed the lead to 25-7. In that stretch, the Bruins turned the ball over numerous times, partly due to bad passing, partly due to the pressure 1-3-1 defense of the Spartans. The Spartans kept that pressure zone on and extended their lead to 35-13 at halftime. As has been the case numerous times this year though, the Bruins did not quit after falling behind early. The Bruins looked to attack the zone harder in the third quarter, and stepped up their defense effort and outscored the Spartans 13-3 in the third period to crawl back into the game and only trailed by a very managable 38-26 score entering the fourth. The Spartans, though, showed why they are the top team in the EDC as they put a quick stretch of baskets together on Katie Dahlen's jumper through traffic, and two breakaway layups by Carissa Jahner sealed the game for North as the Bruins would not mount another rally of their own. South got scoring from their post players again as Katie Luecke scored 11 and Jessica Trautwein chipped in 12. The loss drops South to 10-8 in the EDC. Next action for the Bruins is Saturday night when Valley City pays a visit to the Bruins gym.
