Bruins upset #2 Grand Forks Red River in thriller

Fargo South led for most of the game then held off a late Red River three point barrage for a huge 2 point EDC victory at the Bruins gym on Tuesday night. It was only the Rough Riders' second loss of the season. The Bruins jumped out early on the visiting Rough Riders thanks to some solid shooting and a good transition game. However the lead the Bruins had in the first quarter didn't last long as the Rough Riders scored the last 5 points of the period, including a 3 pointer at the buzzer to tie the game at 13 all. The Bruins and Red River played a back and forth second period as both teams played solid defense and neither team was able to mount a big run. The Bruins were able to take a two point halftime lead at 27-25. The Bruins then played a very good defensive quarter in the third, limiting the Rough Riders to just six points in the period. The defensive effort was helped by the fact that the Bruins did a better job on their defensive boards than they did in the first half when the Rough Riders aggressively attacked the offensive glass for numerous putback baskets. Limiting the Rough Riders' second opportunities was a key for the Bruins the entire second half. The Bruins led 36-31 entering the final quarter. South continued to extend their lead through the midway mark of the quarter and seemed to be in control with just under four minutes left in the game with a nine point lead. However, the Rough Riders would not give in to the Bruins and started to knock down three pointers right and left in the final minutes of the game. The Rough Riders hit 5 three pointers in the final 4 minutes of the game to keep the pressure on the Bruins. Fargo South showed signs of maturity though, as they were able to withstand the Red River run. Important free throws by Jessica Trautwein, Katie Luecke, and Lauren Petrik helped seal the win for the Bruins. But the knockout punch came when Luecke rebounded a missed free throw with the Bruins up 2 points with 30 seconds left then was fouled and made both of her freethrows to push the lead to 4 points at 49-45. Red River made one last three pointer to cut the lead to one point, but with no timeouts left, the Bruins Alicia Calkins just held the ball out of bounds as the final 3 seconds ticked off the clock, giving the Bruins a hard fought 49-48 win. With the win, the Bruins move to 8-4 in the EDC. Next action for Fargo South is next Tuesday when they travel to Grafton in another 2 point game.
