Shanley sweeps regular season against South

It was a case of too much Shanley at the beginning and end and not enough South in the middle. Shanley jumped out early on the Bruins, thanks to a pair of early three pointers by Kristi Kapitan and converted some late game three point plays to hold off the home team in a 68-54 battle in the Bruin gym. Mixed in between though was another solid effort by the Bruins. After giving up the big lead early, South battled back on the strength of their inside game and closed the gap to 20-16 at the end of the first quarter. South continued to chip away at the lead throughout the second quarter as well, and went into the halftime locker room down by only a 29-27 margin. The third quarter again went back and forth as the Bruins continued to score in the paint and the Deacons continued to hit from the perimeter. Shanley took a 42-38 lead into the games final period. Shanley put together a quick run to start the quarter, thanks in part to a Megan Clark long three pointer, and built a ten point lead. South battled back though, and cut the lead back to six points about halfway through the period. The game's big turning point came next though, and it was a tough break for the Bruins. Katie Luecke, playing with 4 fouls, attempted to take a charge from a driving Megan Clark, also playing with 4 fouls. Instead the block was called on Luecke, sending her to the bench, and giving Clark a chance to finish the three point play. South couldn't recover from the loss of Luecke, and Shanley's next two possessions were both three point play opportunities which put the game out of reach for South. Luecke scored a team high 21 points and was helped by Jessica Trautwein's 17 points and 9 rebounds. For South, seniors Katie Luecke, Lauren Petrik, and Crissy Bostow all played their last competitive game in the Bruin gym. The loss for South, coupled with a Red River win over Jamestown, insures a South-Red River matchup in the first round of the East Region tournament which will be held next Thursday through Saturday at the Fargo Civic. South ends their season at 11-9 in EDC play.
