Bruins cruise past Wahpeton

Fargo South capped off a perfect 3-0 week with a very solid performance on the road against the Wahpeton Huskies. Wahpeton couldn't figure out how to break South's sticky zone defense which limited the Huskies to just 9 total field goals for the game. That figure was matched by South senior center Katie Luecke, who turned in her best outing of the season, scoring 22 points, 18 of them in the first half on 9 of 12 shooting. Fargo South opened up the game with a nice offensive output, getting 11 points from Luecke, and 3 baskets off the bench from freshman Christa Salzwedel and senior Crissy Bostow and led 17-8 at the quarter. The Bruin offense continued its hot hand in the second period and South led 33-21 at the break. Defense was the key in the third quarter as the Bruins limited Wahpeton to 3 points, all on one possession as Huskie center Val Sannes converted a traditional 3 point play. Alicia Calkins knocked down a big three pointer right at the quarter buzzer to take give the Bruins a 40-24 advantage and South was never seriously challenged in the final frame. Calkins again had a nice floor game for South as she tossed in 8 points, had 7 steals, grabbed 11 rebounds, and dished out 4 assists. Lauren Petrik also played well running the point spot as she had a season low 3 turnovers and also managed 3 assists and 2 steals. The win puts the Bruins at 4-3 in the conference. Next action for South is Tuesday night when they travel to Jamestown.
