Bruin comeback bid falls short

West Fargo got out of the gate fast, but it was the Bruins who outplayed the Packers over the final three quarters in an exciting EDC game at the Packer gym on Thursday night. The Packers got scoring from unexpected places in the first quarter as they got 14 combined points from Voeller, Western, and Moch. What made matters worse was the fact that the Bruins were stuggling on the offensive end. The Packers looked to be in command and led 19-6 after one quarter. The Bruins started to show signs of life in the second quarter, though, as they attacked the basket with the inside combination of Jessica Trautwein and Katie Luecke. Unfortunately the Bruins had trouble making up ground in the points department as they missed 7 freethrows in the second quarter. The Bruins went to the locker room down by a 35-20 score. The Bruins would not give in though, as they started to claw back into the game through the third period. Mandy Rice gave South a huge boost as she knocked down 3 three pointers in the period, and Truatwein and Luecke chipped in 9 points as well. The Bruins had the lead down to 7 points at 45-38 late in the quarter, but Erin Moch nailed a big three pointer at the buzzer and led by 10 heading into the fourth. Again the Bruins made a charge and chipped away at the lead. Alicia Calkins made a pair of baskets, Katie Luecke made a pair and Mandy Rice made another three pointer, but it was the inside baskets of Jessica Trautwein that got the Bruins close. Trautwein took a nice pass from Christa Salzwedel, scored, got fouled, and made the freethrow to pull South within one point at 52-51with just over 2 minutes left in the game. West Fargo however responded to the challenge. All-state player Amanda Krenz nailed a three pointer as did Kristen Davidson in the final minutes to keep the Bruins at arms length. The Packers made 8 three pointers on the night. The loss drops South to 10-7 in the EDC. Next action for the Bruins is Tuesday night when they go to the northside to take on first place Fargo North.
