Bruins lose in overtime

The last game of the year turned into the first overtime game of the year for Fargo South, with the outcome being not what South was hoping for. Beulah lucked out and outscored the Bruins 11-4 in the overtime to post a 67-60 win in the last game of the year for both teams. It was the first time ever Beulah had faced the Bruins in girls basketball. South faced a zone defense for the third time in three days to start the game, but got balanced scoring to take a 12-11 lead after one quarter. All 5 starters scored with Jessica Trautwein dropping in a couple of baskets and Mandy Rice knocking down a three pointer. In what would be a precurser of things to come, Beulah center Carolyn Becker scored 6 points in the quarter. Scoring picked up for both teams in the second quarter as the Miners got scoring from 7 different player in the period, including a pair of three pointers to outscore the Bruins 20-15 in the period and lead 31-27 at halftime. However after halftime adjustments, it looked as though the Bruins would finally break out of their funk. The post duo of Truatwein and Melanie Hageman began to take over. Trautwein scored on 3 inside baskets, while Hageman got herself to the freethrow line 8 times in the period. A problem that plagued the Bruins for the entire tournament showed up again though, as the Bruins missed out on a chance to really open the lead up by missing 6 free throws in the quarter. The Bruins defense held the Miners to only 9 points in the quarter, and led 44-40 heading into the last quarter of the year. The fourth quarter saw Trautwein and Hageman, along with Alicia Calkins take over, as those three accounted for all of South's points in the final frame. South had a 5 point lead at 56-51 with under 30 seconds to play and looked to be in great shape to end the season with a win, but things went sour from there. Jeni Keller hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 56-54. Beulah was forced to foul, but unfortunately South missed both freethrows and Becker notched her 11th point of the period with a driving layup with under 5 seconds to go to tie the game at 56. South called time out and tried a last second play with 1 second left, but Calkins' shot bounced off the rim as time expired. Things got worse in the overtime as Trautwein picked up her 5th foul and was forced to sit. Keller made another three pointer for the Miners and South couldn't overcome the inside presence of Becker, and the Miners extended their lead and finally posted the 67-60 win. South was 10-23 from the free throw line for the game. South finishes the year at 14-11.
