Satans upset Bruins
Fargo South suffered a tough loss at the hands of Devils Lake on Saturday afternoon, falling to the Satans 64-61 in the Devils Lake gym. South couldn't handle the three point shooting of Devils Lake, who connected on 9 three point field goals in the game, inluding a backbreaker by Melissa Brown that turned a tie game into a three point deficit with a minute remaining. Fargo South started off the game well, scoring on its first few possessions as Jessica Trautwein battled inside for two baskets. A couple of drives to the baskets by Micaela Kruckenberg and some solid play by Alicia Calkins pushed the Bruins to an 18-13 first quarter lead. The Bruins kept the lead for most of the second period, but Devils Lake hit on 4 three pointers in 6 possessions to overtake the Bruins and take a lead into the halftime locker room. The third quarter was more of the same as the Satans kept knocking down shots and meanwhile stayed in their collapsing 2-3 zone defense which tried to take the Bruins post offense away. The strategy was effective, as the Satans opened up a ten point lead, 46-36 about 3 minutes into the second half. The Bruins chipped away though, as the trio of Calkins, Kruckenberg, and Trautwein managed to score important baskets in the final quarter. A three pointer by Mandy Rice cut the lead to 2 points and a three point play by Melanie Hageman gave the Bruins their first lead since the second quarter about halfway through the quarter. The Bruins actually took a 3 point lead with around 3 minutes to play, but that was quickly erased on a three pointer and a curl cut layup for Devils Lake. The Bruins had to foul late in the game, but still had a chance to win or tie late in the game. The Bruins had the ball and called timeout trailing 63-61 with 14 seconds left, but turned the ball over on the ensuing play. The Bruins had to foul again, this time with only 4 seconds left. The Satans made one of two free throws, but again the Bruins turned the ball over in an attempt to quickly advance the ball up the floor trailing by 3 points. A last second attempt to get a 5 second count of the inbounds was unsuccessful, and the Satans walked away with the win, a two point conference game. The loss drops South to 10-5 on the season in the EDC which drops them into a tie with Jamestown for 3rd place. South travels to Jamestown on Tuesday in a game which will go a long way in determining post season seedings.
