First half run lifts Bruins to victory

Fargo South's offense was in high gear in the first half on Tuesday night as they exploded for 42 first half points on their way to an important win over Grafton, a game worth 2 points in the conference standing. Fargo South applied great pressure in the full court and rebounded well on their defensive side which led to one fast break opportunity after another over the course of the first half. The Bruins started quick, jumping out of the gate with a chance for 3 straight 3 point play opportunities to start the game, and although they did not convert on those chances, they set the tone for the game. South built an 11-0 lead before the Spoilers got on the board with a Sue three pointer midway through the first quarter. South kept the offense going though and led 21-6 with 3 minutes still remaining in the quarter. Grafton wouldn't quit though, and the hot shooting of 22 kept the Spoilers within shouting distance. Jessica Trautwein led the way for South in the first half as she scored 14 points despite missing 7 freethrows in the half. Fargo South led 42-27 at halftime. The second half had a different feel to it as Grafton changed to more of a trapping half court zone defense which had the effect of slowing the Bruins transition game down. South still attacked the zone hard though, and the combination of Alicia Calkins in the short corner and Trautwein, Melanie Hageman, and Laura Stroup inside was too much for the Spoilers to handle. The lead was never closer than 12 points the entire second half. It was a total team effort as 4 players scored in double figures for South, led by the 23 points of Trautwein. The win moves South to 9-3 in the conference and into third place. Next action for South is Thursday night when they host Grand Forks Central, a team who beat the Bruins up in Grand Forks.
