Bruins advance to semi's

Fargo South put all 5 starters in double figures and steadily pulled away from the Grafton Spoilers in the opening round of the EDC tournament Thursday. The Bruins put a lot of points on the board in their convincing 79-47 win. Micaela Kruckenberg got South off to the good start, tossing in 8 of her game high 17 points in the opening quarter, which included a three pointer and a couple of nice drives to the basket. South also took advantage of their superior size inside. With no player over 5'10 on Grafton's roster, the Bruins kept feeding the posts who converted on most of their chances. South's 3 posts combined for 36 points, led by Jessica Trautwein's 17. The three also grabbed 19 rebounds. South outscored the Spoilers in both of the first 2 quarters and led 38-26 at halftime, but really opened things up in the third quarter. The Bruins outscored the Spoilers 24-12 in the period, including an 11-0 run to end the quarter. Laura Stroup connected on a pair of inside baskets and Alicia Calkins, who dished out 9 assists in the game, and Trautwein both put in 3 baskets of their own. Mandy Rice hit a three pointer in the closing seconds of the quarter, and the Bruins led 62-40 heading into the final frame. Grafton didn't get any closer the rest of the way, and the Bruins cruised to the 32 point win. South will play top ranked North at 6:30 Friday.
