Mandan drops South

Heidi Zander hurt the Bruins in the East-West tourney, then hurt them again in the state tourney. Zander scored a game high 16 points and grabbed 10 rebounds to lead the Braves to a 46-42 win over South on Friday afternoon. The Bruins led after the first quarter in which both teams looked like they were coming off a loss in the opening round. South led 8-7 after one quarter. Zander took over in the second quarter though, as she dropped in 9 points. South tried to keep it close from the line, making 9 of 12 freethrows in the period, but Mandan countered by making 8 freethrows of their own. Mandan opened up a 28-21 lead at halftime. South made a run again in the third quarter. Post play accounted for 10 of their 12 points in the period, and the defense held the Braves to only 4 baskets. South trailed 36-33 heading into the final frame. Although both teams played hard in the final 8 minutes, the Braves simply maintained their slim lead throughout the quarter and held on for the 46-42 win. South drops to 14-10 on the year and will play Beulah in the seventh place game on Saturday.
