South drops State qualifying game to North

3 was not a lucky number for South on Friday night. It was the third time the Bruins have faced the Spartans and it was the third time the Bruins have been defeated. It was the 3 that gave the Spartans a lead they wouldn't relinquish in the first half as they connected on 5 three pointers before halftime, including a three by Katie Dahlen to both end the first quarter and to begin the second. Fargo South played a solid first quarter, controlling the tempo of the game and getting good shots. The Bruins were able to score a couple of baskets off of their secondary break early, and played the Spartans to a 12-12 first quarter tie. From that point on though, the Bruins would have a tough time scoring. North clamped down on defense and held the Bruins to their lowest point production of the year. North scored the first 8 points of the second period while limiting the Bruins to only 1 shot attempt during that run in building a 20-12 lead midway though the period. A basket by Melanie Hageman cut the lead to 20-14, but that would be as close as the game would ever get again. The Spartans closed out the quarter on a 10-3 run to build a 30-17 halftime lead, then started the third quarter with another run of 11-3, pushing the lead to 41-20. The Bruins were not able to mount any kind of a comeback threat against the top ranked North girls in the second half, and the Spartans cruised to the 23 point win. South will now play Grand Forks Central in a winner take all game at 5:45 on Saturday. The winner will advance to next weeks Class A State Tournament, while the loser ends their season.
