Bruins send off Rice, Calkins with dominating win

It was senior night and parents night in the Bruins gym Friday, which meant it was the last time seniors Mandy Rice and Alicia Calkins would play in the gym where they have played since 1999. And the Bruins did not disappoint - South opened the game on a 13-2 run and never looked back as they cruised past the #4 ranked team in the state 59-31. It was only the 3rd loss of the year for Red River. Calkins got the Bruins off to their hot start as she made a basket of her own, and made the assist on the first 4 other Bruins baskets. Calkins ended the game by getting double figures in both scoring and rebounding and also dished out 6 assists and had 6 steals. Jessica Trautwein was on the receiving end of many of those assists as she totaled a team high 24 points. What was most impressive on the night for South though, was their strong defense. The Bruins held the Riders to just 11 points in the first half when they built a huge 36-11 halftime lead, then held the Riders in check again in the 3rd quarter and led 50-16 heading into the final frame. This was the second game in a row that South has used a dominating half to propel them to victory - they led Shanley by 30 points at halftime on Monday night. The Bruins hope to carry over that momentum into this weeks regional tournament which begins on Thursday when they play Grafton at 4:45 at the Fargo Civic. The Bruins end up the regular season 13-7 in the EDC and 12-7 overall.
