3rd quarter lifts Bruins in opener

The first half was a typical opening game for both teams - lots of energy, lots of fouls, and a close game with both teams trying to make the adjustment from 2 weeks of practice to a game setting. After halftime however, the Fargo South Bruins came out and dominated the third quarter, outscoring the Saints 27-9 in the period. The Bruins never let the Saints get any closer than 20 points the rest of the way. The post play combinations of Jessica Trautwein, Melanie Hageman, and Laura Stroup controlled the boards in the key stretch of the game, seemingly grabbing every rebound in the quarter. With control of the boards in hand, the Bruins were able to push the ball up the floor and got many fast break opportunities. The win was a total team effort though as 10 players for South scored, including 3 in double figures, led by Trautwein's 15 points and 6 rebounds. Alicia Calkins had a great floor game as she ended up with 10 points, 7 rebounds, 5 assists, and 5 steals. Point guard Micaela Kruckenberg also added 5 assists, while 3 differents players knocked down three pointers for the Bruins: Mandy Rice, Mandy Dobmeier, and Christa Salzwedel all connected from deep. The win pushes the Bruins to 1-0 on the season. Next action for South is Friday night when they host perrenial west power Bismarck High at the Bruin gym. Game time is 8:00.
