Bruins thump Hi-Liners
Despite getting off to a somewhat sluggish start, Fargo South put together a couple of nice runs to outscore the Hi-Liners 72-51 in EDC play on Saturday afternoon. Valley City opened the scoring in the game when Christy Johnson knocked down a three pointer, but the lead was to be short lived. South got baskets by all five starters in the first quarter including a couple of driving baskets by Micaela Kruckenberg and a three pointer from Mandy Rice. Alicia Calkins made a big steal and converted it into a layup at the quarter buzzer, and South led 16-11 after one quarter. The Bruins continued to attack the zone defense of Valley City in the second quarter, getting good looks down low from Calkins, who again both scored and assisted from the short corner area. Laura Stroup and Christa Salzwedel gave good sparks off the bench in the period too, as Stroup scored on a pair of offensive putbacks. Salzwedel hit a perimeter shot from straight on, between two Valley defenders, then two possessions later hit a three pointer just before the halftime buzzer to give the Bruins a 35-19 lead. Valley didn't give in though as the Hi-Liners outscored the Bruins 9-2 in the first 90 seconds of the third quarter to pull within 37-28, but that would be as close as the Hi-Liners would get. With the Bruin defense causing the Hi-Liners to either turn the ball over or rush shots, Rice hit a couple of jumpers from outside, and the inside game of Jessica Trautwein and Stroup carried the way for a South run that put the game out of reach at 56-37 at the end of three periods. Valley never made another run at South and the Bruins cruised to the 21 point win. With the win the Bruins go to 7-3 in the EDC and 7-4 overall. Next action for South is Tuesday night when they host the Grafton Spoilers.
