South rallies for important win

It was to be 4-2 or 2-4 for Fargo South after Saturdays 2 point game in Wahpeton, and for the first quarter it did not look positive for the Bruins. Wahpeton made their first 9 shots of the game, including 3 three pointers, and raced out to an 18-4 lead just minutes into the game. The Bruins, however, hung in and weathered the storm, outscoring the Huskies 12-6 in the final 3 minutes of the first quarter to stay close at 24-16 at the break. Melanie Hageman made 4 freethrows and Mandy Dobmeier hit a three pointer. The defense of the Bruins tightened up in the second period and held the Huskies to only 3 field goals in the quarter. South charged back behind the scoring of Micaela Kruckenberg and Alicia Calkins, both scoring 7 points in the period, accounting for 14 of South's 16 quarter points. Calkins, who struggled at the outset, recovered to be the top player on the floor for the remainder of the game. Calkins pumped in 20 points, grabbed 17 rebounds, dished out 4 assists, and added 3 steals in the game before fouling out late in the game. Post player Jessica Trautwein was on the receiving end of many of those passes and also tossed in 20 points. In the third quarter, Kruckenberg did a good job of putting pressure on the Huskie's defense by penetrating the zone and getting to the line and dishing out assists of her own. The Bruins held Wahpeton to 2 points for the first 5 minutes of the half and went ahead, building a 44-33 lead midway through the period. The Huskies didn't go quietly though. Helped by 15 freethrow attempts in the fourth quarter which fouled out both Kruckenberg and Calkins, the Huskies got as close as 4 points late in the game, but a pair of Mandy Rice freethrows in the final seconds secured the 66-60 win for Fargo South. The win moves South to 4-2 in the EDC and 5-3 overall. Next up for South is #4 ranked Jamestown, who visit the Bruin gym on Tuesday night.
