3rd quarter lifts Bruins past Demons
The third quarter proved to be the difference as the Bruins extended a 4 point halftime lead and then held off the #5 Bismarck Demons for a 55-43 win. Jessica Trautwein was the story early as she scored 8 of her team high 16 points in the opening period as she controlled the lane with both scoring and rebounding. Bismarck countered from the perimeter though, hitting 2 three pointers in the opening quarter to hold a slim 16-13 lead after one. The Bruins continued to pound away inside in the 2nd quarter as well, with Mel Hageman getting to the line continually, putting the Demons in foul trouble early on - the Bruins shot 16 free throws in the second quarter alone. The Bruins were able to take the lead into halftime, leading 31-27. In the third quarter, the inside game again paid dividends for South, as Hageman was able to get loose inside on back to back possessions for easy baskets, forcing Bismarck to use a time out and change defenses. That change slowed the Bruins down, but only temporarily. The fourth quarter was a total team effort as 7 different Bruins scored, including a hustle play by Kali Odegaard that resulted in free throws, an easy basket inside again from Trautwein, and key baskets from Kari Flaagan from the baseline and a three pointer from Christa Salzwedel, both helping to hold off a charging Demon team. Amy Hannaher also played a big role in the second half, controlling the defensive rebounds for South as she grabbed 7 second half rebounds. The win moved South to 3-2 on the year and marks the second time this season South has defeated a ranked opponent. They will have a chance to make that three times on Saturday as they host #2 Mandan at 2:30.
