Bruins finish 4th at State

Fargo South wrapped up the 2002-03 season with a loss in the third place game on Saturday afternoon in the Fargodome, a 71-59 decision to Bismarck Century. The first half of the game was a typical third place game - both teams playing with no pressure and just playing hard for the competition. Century was scoring at will in the first quarter, both on offensive rebounds and in the half court setting. Century jumped out to a 24-17 lead after one period. South returned the favor in the second quarter where the Bruins caught fire. Mandy Dobmeier and Christa Salzwedel both hit from behind the three point arc, and Jessica Trautwein continued to score inside. Trautwein had 14 points by halftime and the Bruins missed only 6 shots the entire first half. South led a high scoring first half 41-39 heading into the locker room. Unfortunately for South, that hot shooting wouldn't continue. Century's zone defense finally slowed the Bruins down held South to only 4 points in the third quarter while the Patriot offense continued to score. Century opened up a 56-45 lead heading into the final quarter. South never really was able to mount a threat in the fourth quarter, and the Century lead never got below 10 points in the final period. Trautwein led the Bruins in scoring with 20 points and was joined by Mel Hageman in double figures with 10 points. The loss drops South's final record to 17-8 on the year. Trautwein finished her career as South's second all time leading scorer and the top rebounder in school history.
