Bruins win 5th straight
Last season, Fargo South hurt themselves by dropping a two point game game at Devils Lake that cost them a seeding spot in the state tourney. With that as the motivation for this years team, the Bruins made the 3 hour trip to Devils Lake and took 2 important EDC points home with them. After a sluggish start, the Bruins blew the game open in the third quarter and cruised to a convincing 56-31 win. Fargo South led for entire game, but couldn't seem to get any space between themselves and Devils Lake. Foul trouble hampered the Bruins early as leading scorer and rebounder Jessica Trautwein picked up 2 early fouls and spent most of the first quarter on the bench. Mel Hageman picked up the slack inside though, where she drew foul after foul on Devils Lake with her strong inside play. South led by only a 4 point margin after the first period. In a closely played second quarter again baskets were hard to come by. A couple of nice feeds from Kari Flaagan to Hageman, and a pair of mid range shots by Mandy Dobmeier kept the Bruins on top at the halftime break, but only by a score of 23-15. The third quarter proved to be the turning point of the game though. South's defense really took over - ball pressure up top and good anticipation by the wings led to a couple of easy transition baskets, and three pointers by Dobmeier and Christa Salzwedel broke the game open even more. On the defense side of things, South only allowed 5 points in the quarter and the Bruins held a commanding 38-20 lead going into the final frame. South's defense continuted to shine in the fourth quarter, allowing only 3 more points for the first 6 minutes of the period. South was led by the 21 points and 7 rebounds of Mel Hageman. The win moves the Bruins to 9-1 in the EDC and sets up a battle with first place North on Tuesday at the Civic. The Spartans and the Bruins are 1-2 in the conference, with South trailing North by only 1 game in the loss column.
