Spartans sweep season from Bruins

The Fargo North Spartans completed the season sweep of South on Friday in the State Tournament semi-finals with a convincing 65-36 win at the Fargodome. The Spartans crashed the boards hard in the opening quarter to foil South's chasing defensive strategy. North missed shots early but Heidi Fiechtner was there to clean up and get put backs. North jumped out 5-0 on the strength of Fiechtner, and South countered with a three point play by Jessica Trautwein to make it 5-3, but it was all North after that. The Spartans continued to dominate on the glass and get put back after put back early on. Meanwhile, South was stuggling to make freethrows which let the Spartans extend their lead. North raced to a commanding 23-6 lead after one quarter. The second quarter was played more evenly and the Bruins tried to chip away at the lead. Kari Flaagan hit a three pointer to cut the lead to 32-16 midway through the quarter, but South couldn't get any closer. At halftime, the Spartans had built a 38-20 lead and cruised from there. North continued to pour it on in the second half and a three pointer by Kayla Dahlen late in the fourth quarter gave the Spartans a 30 point lead. Fargo South was led in scoring by Jessica Trautwein, who scored 15 points and grabbed 11 rebounds. South will play Bismarck Century in the 3rd place game on Saturday.
