Bruins shut down Red River

Grand Forks Red River came into Tuesday night's game on a serious hot streak, averaging just under 72 points per game over their 8 game winning streak, but South put the clamps down on defense and held the Riders nearly 30 points below that average in a 52-42 win in both teams' regular season finale. The Bruins used a nice transition game to get easy basket after easy basket in the first half, then pounded it inside to all-state post player Jessica Trautwein in the second half, who led everyone with 23 points, 12 rebounds and 5 blocked shots. South led early in the game which was played at a frantic pace for the first 5 minutes with both teams trying to establish a running game, but it was the Bruins who had players running the floor for easy baskets as they led 14-9 after one. The perimeter game chipped in for South in the second quarter as Christa Salzwedel hit a three, followed a couple possessions later by a Mandy Dobmeier three. South's defense meanwhile was holding the Riders to just 2 field goals in the period and the Bruins led 26-18 at halftime. South's inside game flourished in the third quarter as the Bruins got 14 of their 15 quarter points from their two post players, led by Trautwein's 10 points. Mel Hageman went 4 for 4 from the line to help keep the pressure on the Rider defenders and the Bruins took a 41-31 lead into the final quarter. In that fourth quarter, the Bruins simply maintained the lead as the Riders could not string together enough stops to mount a comeback attempt. The Bruins held on for the comfortable 10 point win. The win moves South to 17-3 in the EDC and 14-5 overall. South will now start postseason as they will take on the winner of Fargo Shanley and Wahpeton, who play on Friday night. South plays at 5:30 next Thursday night on the south court of the Fargodome.
