South excises Demons
In a match-up of the state's only remaining undefeated teams, Fargo South used a total team effort to remain perfect on the season in a 76-57 dominating win over Bismarck High. The Bruins again put lots of points on the board, led by All-Stater Mel Hageman who poured in a career high 27 points, followed by 15 each from Amy Hannaher and Katie Thingelstad. In the first half, South used the inside power of Hageman and Thingelstad to steadily pull away to an 18-12 lead. In the second quarter, the Bruins used their transition game to really open things up. Point guard Cammi Greenheck had a pair of beautiful 40 foot passes for layups to post players, while Katie Thingelstad was on the recieving end on another nifty fast break passing attack, this time with Rachel Wagner getting the assist. South used this transition game and a stingy defense to extend the lead to 34-18 at halftime. In the third quarter, the Bruins again got scoring from Hageman, who had 12 points in the quarter, and built a 43-21 lead. Bismarck wouldn't give in though, and a pair of three-pointers by Megan Mees and some nice inside work by Kate Moser closed the gap forcing South into a timeout. South responded nicely to the Demon challenge though as Amy Hannaher knocked down a pair of three-pointers of her own, and a pair of steals by McKenzie Mehlisch gave the Bruins breathing room again as South took a 57-36 lead into the fourth. Again, Bismarck threatened to close the gap as Rebekah Schwab and Casey Lenihan connected on back to back three's, but that was quickly answered by a Greenheck three, followed by a nice backdoor layup by Joslynn Tharaldson. The Bruins made 8-10 freethrows down the stretch and held off the Demons by the final 19 point margin. South improves to 5-0 on the year. Next action for South is Wednesday as they take on 3rd ranked Century in the Patriot gym.
