Threes spark Bruins win

Shaking off the effects of a tough loss on Thursday night, the Fargo South Bruins used the longball to take control of a tight game in the third quarter and walked away with a 66-48 win over Fargo Shanley on Saturday in the Bruin gym. Melanie Hageman scored in bunches early for South, as she was on the receiving end of some beautiful fast breaks by the Bruins. South had a pair of fast breaks where the ball never touched the floor, one of them with an "and one" to finish it off. Amy Hannaher also bounced back after a tough night against Moorhead, as she attacked the basket for another three point play in the quarter and also led the defensive charge with a game high 7 steals. Joslynn Tharaldson and Katie Thingelstad also scored for South to keep the Bruin lead. Shanley countered with a pair of three pointers by Giuli Varriano, and a three point play by EDC scoring leader Brittany Geffre to start the game. South led 18-15 at the end of one. In the second quarter the teams settled in to trade baskets for most of the quarter. Geffre led the charge for the Deacons with three hoops, while Jenna Lee hit from downtown for South. The Bruins held a slim 32-27 lead at halftime. The third quarter proved to be the difference maker in the game though. Geffre scored to open the quarter, making it 32-29, but then South started to heat up on offense and defense. Hannaher began the run with a three pointer from the wing, which was followed up moments later by a driving basket and a long two pointer from Cammi Greenheck. Jenna Lee then hit three pointers on back to back possessions to stake the Bruins to a 45-33 lead, forcing a Shanley timeout, and grabbing control of the game for South. Shanley managed to keep it close after that, trailing just 46-33 heading into the final quarter, but the Bruins cashed in from the foul line in the fourth quarter to keep the game out of reach for Shanley. South made 12 of 16 free throws in the final quarter, and got 3 big baskets from Thingelstad late to secure the win for South. The balance of South, putting 4 girls in double figures, was the difference in the game. Melanie Hageman led the charge with 18 points, while Amy Hannaher scored 14, Katie Thingelstad 12, and Jenna Lee 11. The win moves South to 12-0 in the EDC and 12-2 overall. Next action is Tuesday night when the Bruins host second place and 5th ranked Grand Forks Central.
