South crushes Huskies

Fargo South got back to its winning ways on Tuesday night as the Bruins destroyed the Wahpeton Huskies 76-30 in the Bruin gym in an important 2 point game. The Bruins used a strong second half to overwhelm the Huskies and move their record to 5-0 in the EDC, while improving to 6-1 overall. The first quarter though didn't go as the Bruins would have liked. The Bruins struggled to control the game, despite the inside presense of Mel Hageman, who scored the first 7 points of the game for South. Lindsay Sannes kept things close for Wahpteton, who trailed just 13-7 after the first quarter. The Huskies managed to keep the Bruins out of their running game, and used up nearly all of their time-outs early to keep the Bruins from establishing the tempo of the game. In the second quarter things began to change for South though. Hageman continued to dominate inside, while Amy Hannaher began to find the range from the perimeter, chipping in 7 points in the second quarter, including the first of her 4 three-pointers on the evening. At halftime, Hageman nearly equaled the Huskie output, scoring 15 points in the half as the Bruins took a 32-17 halftime lead. The Bruins then responded well to the halftime challenge in the third quarter to take control of the game. Playing with much more energy and enthusiasm in the third, the Bruins pressure defense played havoc with the Huskies. The man to man defensive pressure, sparked by the defensive effort of Rachel Wagner, swarmed the Huskies on every opportunity and the result was a large amount of transition baskets and wide open shots. Hannaher really got going in the third as she poured in 13 points in that quarter, including 3 three-pointers and a pair of beautiful fast break baskets. Katie Thingelstad and Joslynn Tharaldson also helped in the post when the Bruins made a slight change in how they attacked the zone defense of Wahpeton - the result was a a team high 6 assists for Thingelstad, as she and Tharaldson each contributed 4 points in the third, a quarter in which the Bruins outscored the Huskies 29-4 to blow the game wide open. The fouth quarter the Bruins continued to play hard in the half court setting on defense while Hageman continued to score inside on her way to a career high 29 points - she also pulled down a team high 9 rebounds. Lindsay Sauvageau also added a nice spark off the bench with a great defensive effort and a three-pointer. South only placed 2 girls in double figures, but both girls gave huge numbers - Hageman's 29 was coupled with Hannaher's 20. Next action for South is Friday night when they travel to Grand Forks Central, a place where the Bruins have not won since 1999.
