South outruns Coyotes

Fargo South shook off the Christmas rust in a sluggish first quarter and dominated the last 3 to cruise to an 87-51 win over Williston in the East-West opener. Amy Hannaher got the Bruins off to a fast start with a three-pointer on the opening play, but that was quickly answered by a three from Williston's Kayla Rogers. The Bruins couldn't quite get in synch in the opening minutes and the Coyotes led 14-13 after one, but that lead was to be short lived. The Bruins got their running game going by putting together some defensive stops. South held the Coyotes to just 2 field goals in the second quarter and so was able to get out in transition to get some good looks at the basket. The triple post combo of Mel Hageman, Katie Thingelstad, and Joslynn Tharaldson took care of business inside, including a beautiful high-low pass from Hageman to Thingelstad, while the perimeter duo of McKenzie Mehlisch and Hannaher ran the floor and scored that way. South put 26 points on the board in the second quarter and took a 39-23 lead into halftime. The third qurter really saw the full force of the Bruins though. Hageman took over inside by both scoring and post passing, while sophomore Cammi Greenheck, getting her first varsity start, ran the fast break for South to perfection. The third quarter saw the Bruins extend their lead to 62-31. The fourth quarter also saw Greenheck make a couple of beautiful picks on defense which translated into two layups, and Jenna Lee continue her hot shooting with a pair of three-pointers to add to her 5 three-pointers in the JV game earlier. All twelve girls played as the Bruins cruised to the 37 point win. The Bruins placed 3 girls in double figures as Hageman continued her streak of 20 point games with exactly that many. She was joined by Amy Hannaher's career high 19 and Katie Thingelstad's career high 16. The win moves South to 4-0 on the season and sets up tomorrows showdown with Bismarck as the only 2 remaining undefeated teams in Class A.
