SOUTH BALANCE SPARKS WIN OVER NORTH

It was a total team effort that helped South maintain their first place standing the EDC with a 58-42 win in the Spartandome Tuesday night. South had 3 starters in double figures, and another with 9 in the balanced effort, countering the 16 point effort of Ali Hanson from North. Jenna Lee broke out of a tough shooting week to drop in a team high 16 points, including 4 three-pointers. Early on the Bruins scored in bunches. Lindsay Sauvageau, who played her best all-around game of the year, scored on some beautiful passes from Cammi Greenheck early, as the Bruins forced some early turnovers on the Spartans, leading to easy baskets. Julie Hageman also came in early and picked up Joslynn Tharaldson, who was hampered by foul trouble the entire night. Jenna Lee hit a three pointer late in the quarter, then dropped in another three right before the quarter buzzer, giving South a 20-13 lead. The second quarter was evenly played, as both teams' defenses took some things away from each other. Cammi Greenheck scored on a beautiful slicing drive through the "trees" and also made a midrange jumper as she scored half of South's 10 second quarter points. At halftime, with both teams playing well, the Bruins held a 30-24 lead. In the third quarter, the Bruin defense began to shine. McKenzie Mehlisch elevated her defensive game and seemed like she was everywhere on the court for a while. Mehlisch tipped a number of passes and ended the night with a team high 6 steals, just 1 shy of getting into South's "Top 10" list of steals. South's defense held the Spartans to only two field goals in the period and on offense, the guards continued to carry the way for South as all three starters scored in the quarter. Heading into the final frame, the Bruins had built a 43-31 lead. In the final quarter, the Bruins again made some big plays to keep their lead. Jenna Lee hit two more three-pointers, both of which came at crucial times and Joslynn Tharaldson scored two inside baskets on nice lob passing from Jenna Lee. As the game wound down, the Spartans were forced to foul, and the Bruins' guards finished the game shooting freethrows, as South went 5-9 in the final few minutes to secure the win. After Jenna Lee's 16 points, Cammi Greenheck, who has looked to be more offensive minded, dropped in 13 points and dished out a team high 6 assists. Joslynn Tharaldson also reached double figures with 10 points. The win moves South to 10-2 overall and 8-1 in the EDC. Next action for South is a week from Thursday when they host second place Grand Forks Central in the Bruin gym in a huge 2 point game.
