BRUINS CONTINUE TO WIN, DEFEAT DEACONS

Fargo South opened up the game with 7 straight points and never looked back as they completed the season sweep of crosstown rival Shanley in the Deacon gym on Saturday afternoon, winning by a 65-52 score. Early on the Bruins were clicking both on offense and defense. McKenzie Mehlisch scored on a transition layup, Lindsay Sauvageau hit a three pointer, and Cammi Greenheck made a pair of freethrows to get the Bruins off to the hot start. The Greenheck freethrows would be a recurring theme later in the game. For Shanley, Jessica Sampson and Brittany Geffre kept the Deacons close by both hitting from downtown. Joslynn Tharaldson continued her solid play inside as well, scoring on a pair of nice inside moves. After one quarter, the Bruins had built a 17-10 lead. The Bruins extended that lead as Julie Hageman came off the bench to give the Bruins a big spark. Hageman cleaned up inside and scored 9 first half points, all from in tight. Joslynn Tharaldson also kept the pressure on the Deacons inside as she led South with 13 halftime points, including 8 in the second quarter. Shanley held tough though, as again they were able to knock down a pair of threes, this time from Katie Bower and Brittany Geffre. South led 32-20 at halftime. The Bruins really opened things up in the third quarter though. Cammi Greenheck had two layup opportunities, thanks to some nice passing by the rest of the team, and also scored another buzzer beater to beat the shot clock on a driving pull up shot in the lane, then made a nice driving layup late in the quarter. McKenzie Mehlisch also scored an "and one" after she made a great shot fake in close to get her defender to leave her feet. The Bruins were also doing it on the defensive end as well. South limited the Deacons to only two field goals in the quarter, although one was a three pointer, and the Bruins took a commanding 47-28 lead into the final quarter. The Deacons didn't give up though, and after scoring a very quick 5 points to open the quarter, cutting the lead to 47-33, the Bruins called a time-out to get things settled back down. Unfortunately for the Bruins, Shanley built on that momentum and got the noisy crowd back into the game. Brittany Geffre started to take over on offense for Shanley, and she was able to get to the basket and offensive rebound to keep scoring. Geffre tallied 13 points in the fourth quarter alone, and after a pair of transition baskets by Guili Varriano, the Deacons had sliced the Bruin lead to 48-41, and appeared to be ready for a major comeback. South had the answers down the stretch though. Cammi Greenheck drove and dished to Julie Hageman for a big basket to stem the tide, then the Bruins scored on an inside basket by Joslynn Tharaldson to give South some breathing room at 52-41. South continued to let Greenheck work up top to break the defense down, and the result was a parade to the freethrow line for the junior point guard. Cammi went 11-12 from the line in the last 3 minutes of the game to clinch the win for South, and ended up with a game high 21 points. Joining Greenheck in double figures were Joslynn Tharaldson with 18 points, and Julie Hageman with 13. The win moves South to 11-1 in the EDC, and 12-2 overall. Next action is Tuesday night when the Bruins return home to take on Red River, the only EDC team to defeat South this year.
