BRUINS OUTGUN COYOTES
It was a tale of two halves for the Fargo South Bruins on Monday, as they overcame a sluggish start and dropped in 45 second half points in a 71-62 win over Williston in the opener of the East-West Holiday Tourney. Leading the way was a record setting performance from Jenna Lee, who torched the net for 25 second half points on her way to a school record 7 three pointers and 28 points. In the first half it was Williston dictating the game however. The Coyotes played a box and 1 defense, chasing point guard Cammi Greenheck for almost all of the first half. The strategy seemed to be working as South couldn't seem to find the range from the field early on. McKenzie Mehlish scored on a steal and layup and another nice inside basket, and Greenheck also scored on a pick and layup. Jenna Lee hit her first three of the game to keep it close, but South trailed 12-11 after one. In the second quarter, the Coyotes had some hot shooters, as they racked up 21 points, including three pointers from Kayla Fee and Anne Hanson. Williston also made some nice pull up jump shots in transition, and held a six to eight point lead most of the quarter. South stayed in the game though - Joslynn Tharaldson scored 9 points in the quarter, hitting a couple of perimeter shots and a couple of inside shots. Lindsay Sauvageau also helped the cause, as she knocked down a three pointer as well. However, the Coyotes still maintained a solid 33-26 halftime lead. The third quarter turned into the Jenna Lee show though. Jenna continually found herself open along the three point arc and the rest of the team continued to find her. Lee dropped in 17 points in the quarter, including 4 three pointers and a pair of two pointers. The Bruins were chipping away at the Coyote lead all quarter, and finally took the lead for good as Cammi Greenheck drove down the lane in the waning seconds of the quarter and made a beautiful dish out to Lee in the corner, who calmly swished in her fifth three of the game right at the buzzer to end the quarter and give South a 45-44 lead heading into the final frame. The fourth quarter continued right where the third quarter ended. Jenna Lee hit two more three's to really give the Bruins some breathing room and McKenzie Mehlisch scored on a pretty drive to the basket to further lift South's lead. Lindsay Sauvageau also scored on another pair of baskets and the Bruins were well on their way to the win. South had built a double digit lead late in the game and it turned into a parade to the freethrow line in the late going, where South maintained their lead by going 10-12 from the line in the quarter. The Coyotes did hit a couple of long range shots late to close the gap, but South hung on for the 71-62 final. Jenna Lee led 4 South players in double figures with a career high 28 points, followed up by Joslynn Tharaldson with 15, while McKenzie Mehlisch and Lindsay Sauvageau both scored 12. Cammi Greenheck only scored 4 points, but had her usual sparkling floor game. Cammi played 30 of the 32 minutes with only 1 turnover, while dishing out a team high 5 assists, all the while handling the ball against Williston's full court defense. The win moves South to 5-0 on the year. Next action for South is Tuesday night when they host Bismarck St. Mary's.
