4th quarter let down dooms Bruins
Fargo South started hot, but the Bismarck Demons finished stronger, and the Bruins dropped a tough 57-50 decision on Thursday night in the Bismarck gym. South scored the first 11 points of the game. Jenna Lee, Cammi Greenheck, Lindsay Sauvageau, and Julie Hageman all scored field goals, and the run was capped off by a three pointer by Sauvageau, forcing a Bismarck timeout midway through the first quarter. A basket by Ivy Gilbertson cut the lead to 11-2, but the Jenna Lee hit another three pointer for the Bruins to give South a 14-2 lead after one period, and the Bruins appeared to be in control of the game. Bismarck battled back in the second though with a pair of three pointers and some inside baskets from Ivy Gilbertson and Ann Baltzer. For South, Nicki Brodeur scored a tough inside basket and was fouled for a three point play, while Jenna Lee hit another from downtown. At halftime, the Bruins led 27-19. The third quarter was also closely played. South got scoring as Cammi Greenheck was able to score on drives and also hit from midrange. Lindsay Sauvageau also scored on a nice transition basket, and Jenna Lee hit another three pointer to stake the Bruins to a 40-34 lead late in the quarter. A big turning point came with just 2 seconds left in the period though. The Bruins had the ball under their own basket and Lindsay Sauvageau hit a three pointer which would have given South both a nine point lead and momentum heading into the final quarter, but the Bruins were called for an illegal screen on the play, negating the basket and the momentum. South led by that same 40-34 score heading into the final quarter. The Demons used that break to take over the game in the fourth. The Demons attacked the basket and got to the line 18 times in the period, and the Bruins could not muster anything on the offensive end. Bismarck outscored South 23-10 in the final quarter and walked away with the 57-50 win. One big stat of the game - South went 4-12 from the line, while the Demons were a solid 18-23. Jenna Lee led South with 15 points. The Bruins fall to 4-2 on the year.
