Firebirds snap Bruins win streak

Devils Lake came out firing on all cylinders and upset the Bruins 59-55 in the Bruin gym on Friday night. The Firebirds used their terrific team speed to harass the Bruins into committing 32 turnovers, a season high for the Bruins. Devils Lake also shot the ball well, hitting on some clutch shots throughout the game as they led nearly from start to finish. Devils Lake started the game on a 6-0 run before a Lindsay Sauvageau three pointer got the Bruins on the board. The Bruins had no answer for Callie Hanson in the opening quarter though. Hanson got loose inside for 10 points in the opening period, and the Firebirds took a slim 17-15 lead after one period. The second quarter was evenly played, with neither team being able to get seperation. Jill Gagner hit a three pointer for South and the Bruins got a hoop inside from Ali Stensgard on a nice hi-low pass, but the Firebirds countered with a three pointer from Becka Mertens and Ashley Privatsky, and at halftime, the game was tied at 29-29. South appeared to grab the early momentum in the third, as a steal and layup on the opening possession gave South a 31-29 lead, and that was followed up shortly thereafter by a nice fast break lefty layup for Lindsay Sauvageau. However, the Firebirds got hot from downtown midway through the period. Three pointers by Becka Mertens and Emily Soper got the Firebirds rolling, then Ashley Privatsky also drilled a pair of threes to extend the Devils Lake lead. Heading into the final quarter, the Firebirds had built a 43-39 lead. In the fourth, the Bruins tried to mount a comeback as Cammi Greenheck was able to penetrate and score to cut into the lead. Jenna Lee hit a three pointer and midrange two pointer as well, but the Bruins could not quite ever get over the hump. The closest South came in the final period was within 51-50 on a pair of Kirsten Pattison freethrows, but as was the case all night long, Devils Lake had the answers. The Firebirds went 12-15 from the line to close out the game, and in so doing, kept the Bruins from taking over first place in the EDC. Cammi Greenheck led the Bruins with 14 points and 7 assists. The loss drops South to 12-3 in the EDC and 12-4 overall. Next action for South is next Tuesday when they travel to Jamestown.
