Team effort leads to big Bruin victory

For the second straight game, Fargo South got their running game in high gear, and came away with an important road win, defeating Grand Forks Central 75-41 in the Knights gym on Thursday night. The Bruins shot a blistering 60% from the field on the night, including a 20-30 effort in the second half, to bypass the 70 point mark for the 3rd time in the last 4 games. Meanwhile, the Bruin team defense did a nice job slowing down the Knights player of the year candidate Alys Seay, who is leading the EDC in scoring, limiting the 5-9 guard to just 7 points on 3-10 shooting. Early on in the game, the Knights were able to use that Bruin defensive attention to their advantage, as post player Cami Cochran got loose inside for 3 nice turnaround post moves to help the Knights take an early lead. The Bruins countered on offense with some nice transition baskets by Cammi Greenheck and Lindsay Sauvageau, while Jenna Lee got her night off to a good start by hitting a midrange shot from the baseline. In a well played first quarter, the Knights took a 14-12 lead. In the second quarter though, the Bruins began to showcase their team speed and transition game. Cammi Greenheck was the key player in that run as she scored on a pair of fast break layups, including one crowd pleasing look away pass fake that resulted in a bucket. She also set up other players for easy baskets, as Greenheck and Jill Gagner ran a 2 on 1 break to perfection for another layup. South scored the first 8 points of the period and took a 20-14 lead. Once the Knights adjusted to try and slow down the Bruin fastbreak, Jenna Lee took over in the half court setting. Lee hit on 3 midrange shots from the baseline, and capped off her nice quarter with a three pointer shortly before the halftime buzzer. By halftime, South had built a 29-21 lead. South seized the momentum immediately in the second half as well, with Jenna Lee hitting another three pointer on the opening possession of the half, boosting the Bruin lead to 32-21. The rest of the period featured the Bruins running game. Lindsay Sauvageau scored on a break away layup, Cammi Greenheck scored on a difficult in the lane transition basket and made a great pass to Jenna Lee on another. Nicki Brodeur also scored on a tough lefty layup, and in the midst of all of the Bruin fastbreaks, Alicia Stensgard scored on a short shot in the lane and a three point play underneath. By the end of the period, South had stretched out their 8 point halftime lead into a comfortable 47-29 lead. In the fourth, the Bruins stayed hot from the field. Jenna Lee hit a three pointer, again on the first possession, to push the lead to 50-29. The Bruins inside game chipped in also, as Kirsten Pattison and Alicia Stensgard each scored 5 points in the paint for South. In all, 11 different Bruin players scored in the total team effort. Jenna Lee led all scorers with 24 points, while Cammi Greenheck dished out a career high 13 assists, just 3 short of South's all time record. The Bruins improve to 10-1 in the EDC, and 10-3 overall. Next action for the Bruins is Saturday afternoon when they host the Shanley Deacons.
