Bruins Hot Start Lifts Bruins to Semi's
Fargo South scored the first 10 points of the game and never looked back in a 52-32 opening round win over Minot at the Alerus Center Thursday night. Jenna Lee and Cammi Greenheck both nailed three pointers in the opening minutes of the game as the Bruins tried to exploit the Maji's zone defense by finding the open perimeter shots and the result was a lead which South wouldn't relinquish. The defensive effort was great as well, as the Bruins held Minot scoreless for the first 5 minutes of the game. The Bruins also sliced through the zone to get inside hoops in the quarter. Lindsay Sauvageau got to the freethrow line and Cammi Greenheck scored on a drive as well. Both Julie Hageman and Kirsten Pattison scored inside to give the Bruins a solid 14-7 lead after one period. It was the second quarter though where the Bruins began to really pull away. Lindsay Sauvageau dropped in the Bruins' third three pointer of the game, and the running game began to show itself in the period as well. Jill Gagner, Lindsay Sauvageau, Cammi Greenheck, and Nicki Brodeur all scored on nice fast break opportunities, while Alicia Stensgard and Kirsten Pattison each scored inside. After a huge 19-3 quarter, the Bruins had built a commanding 33-10 halftime lead. In the second half, the Bruins had things on cruise control throughout, as their solid defense held off any chance of a run by the Maji. Solid play off the bench by Julie Hageman, and a pair of three pointers by Jenna Lee led the Bruins to the final margin of victory. Jenna Lee led a balanced scoring effort for the Bruins with 11 points. The win moves South into the semi-finals on Saturday as they take on the second ranked team in the state, the Century Patriots. The Bruins improve to 19-4 on the season.
