South wins 7th in a row to stay in first place

Fargo Forum article

Fargo South got out of the gate hot and built an 11 point first quarter lead, then played with that lead to post a 67-49 win over Shanley on Saturday night in the Bruin gym. Cammi Greenheck continued her very impressive play as she led the Bruins to their quick start. Greenheck was continually able to slice through the defense of Shanley and either score or set up her teammates for scores. Cammi dropped in 3 baskets in the opening period and set up Ali Stensgard and Kirsten Pattison for three point plays in the period also. Jenna Lee scored on a nice backscreen layup as well, and the Bruins had built a 17-6 lead by the end of the first period. In the second, freshman Cody Geffre stepped up for the Deacons. Coming off a JV game where she led Shanley in scoring, Geffre made all three shots she took in the second quarter, including a three pointer, on her way to leading the varsity in scoring as well, as she finished with a team high 13 points. For South, the Bruins continued to run the floor. Nicki Brodeur led that charge by scoring three baskets in transition, all three very tough layups from the left side with the defense contesting, and also added a pair of freethrows as she scored 8 points in short succession for the Bruins. The Deacons stayed in it by crashing the boards hard in the period, and managed to cut into the gap, and at halftime, South led by a 34-24 margin. In the third, the Bruins continued to run the floor hard. Cammi Greenheck scored 10 of her team high 16 points in the second half, which included a great coast to coast basket where the senior guard weaved around the entire Deacon team and finished off with a layup to spark the Bruins. Lindsay Sauvageau and Nicki Brodeur also scored on some nice fast break opportunities, and Ali Stensgard scored on a pair of nice inside baskets. By the end of the quarter, South had built a 48-35 lead and was in control for the rest of the game. The Bruins continued to find open players on offense in the fourth, as six different players scored for South. Jenna Lee hit a three pointer from the right corner, Jill Gagner hit a midrange shot from the left corner, and Julie Hageman hit on a pair of shots as well. Lindsay Sauvageau and Cammi Greenheck each made a pair of freethrows late to help keep the Deacons at arms length and the Bruins cruised to the 18 point win. Greenheck's 16 led the Bruins, but she was joined in double figure scoring as Nicki Brodeur added 12, tying her career high, and Kirsten Pattison added 11. South maintains their share of first place in the EDC by improving to 11-1 in the league, and 11-3 overall. Next action for the Bruins is Tuesday when they travel north again to take on Red River.
