BRUINS HOLD OFF HUSKIES
With the Bruins struggling to maintain any kind of a run, the Bruin reserves sparked a third quarter rally, then held on for a 49-43 win at home against the Wahpeton Huskies on Thursday night. The Huskies started out strong, building a 5-4 lead on a Lindsay Sannes basket and a Carrie Dahlman three pointer, then extended that to a 10-4 lead as Lexi Braun made a three point play, and Sannes connected on a pair of freethrows. South responded with the last 6 points of the quarter, including a three point play by Julie Hageman, to tie the game at 10-10 after one period. In the second, the Bruin bench began to show itself. Kylie Heyer knocked down a pair of freethrows and Amy Stroup scored on a nice move inside. Lindsay Sauvageau hit a three pointer and Cammi Greenheck scored in transition to help propel South to a 21-18 halftime lead. In the third, the Huskies again had the hot start. Baskets by Ali Walter and Kriscinda Harris gave Wahpeton a 23-21 lead, giving way for a mass Bruin substitution. The game turned here, as the South reserves competed hard and built a solid 34-25 lead by the end of the quarter. Katie Thorson scored inside and was fouled, Kirsten Pattison made a basket underneath, while Amy Stroup and Mandy Hage both made a pair of freethrows. Nicki Brodeur's basket and Kylie Heyer's big three pointer, accounted for all of the scoring by the Bruins in the period. South built the lead even more, using baskets by Jenna Lee and Cammi Greenheck to push to a 41-28 lead early in the fourth, but the Huskies kept battling back. In a repeat performance of the first game down in Wahpeton, Mallory Vigen got hot from the three point line, nailing 3 three's in the quarter, and Carrie Dahlman also drained one from deep. South led 42-36 with just over 2 minutes to play. That's when the Huskies decided to start fouling. Cammi Greenheck was the recipient of most of those fouls as the Bruins tried to get the ball into her hands against the full court pressure. Greenheck went 8-12 in the final minutes, and Lindsay Sauvageau also knocked down a pair, as the Bruins held off the Huskies from the line. In the end, the Bruins had just enough to hold off the Huskies, and came away with the 49-43 win. South moves to 7-1 in the EDC, a tie for first place with West Fargo, and 8-3 overall. Next action is Tuesday night when they host Fargo North.
