Bruins open up East-West with win over Williston

Fargo South played consistent basketball for all four quarters and withstood a scrappy Williston team to open up the holiday tournament with a hard fought 57-50 win. The Bruins defense held Williston's leading scorer, Leah Sundby, who averages over 18 points per game, to just 1 point. South got out to a good start, using balanced scoring to jump out to a 13-7 first quarter lead. Cammi Greenheck hit on a pair of midrange shots to help lead the Bruins, while Julie Hageman scored 4 inside points. In the second quarter though, Williston found their range on offense. The Coyotes hit a pair of three pointers and took advantage of Bruin fouls to score from the freethrow line, and an Anne Hanson 3 pointer right at the halftime buzzer lifted the Coyotes to a 27-27 tie at halftime. In the third, the Bruins senior point guard began to assert herself and carry the Bruins. Cammi Greenheck pressured the Coyote guards and scored in transition and also hit from midrange to lead South with 8 points in the quarter. The Bruins also got important baskets from Nicki Brodeur, who nailed a three pointer and scored on a conventional three point play to drop in 6 quick points in the period. That surge gave the Bruins a 45-38 lead heading into the final quarter. Williston made things interesting though, as Abby Hagen hit a three pointer, and a three point play by Leah Wesoloski with just over 2 minutes remaining, made it a slim 51-50 South lead. The Bruins however would respond. Alicia Stensgard made a huge offensive rebound putback to give the Bruins breathing room, then South went 4-4 from the line in the closing seconds to secure the hard fought 57-50 win. South was paced by Cammi Greenheck's 18 points. South moves to 4-1 on the season.
