Second half drought dooms Bruins

Fargo South jumped out to a quick 12-0 lead on the second ranked team in the state on Friday night in the Bruin gym, but a strong second half by the Patriots was too much for the Bruins to handle, and Century controlled the second half for a season opening 79-58 win over South. Early on everything was clicking for South as Katie Thorson hit a pair of three pointers and Kirsten Pattison and Ali Stensgard each scored from down deep in the paint. The Patriots clawed back though on the strength of Brittany Jossart, who scored a team high 24 points in the game. Caitlyn Haring also helped the Bruin cause, as she hit a long three pointer in the first half. After leading most of the first half the Bruins found themselves down near the end of the half, but Mandy Hage hit back to back three pointers to help South to a slim 31-30 halftime lead. In the second half though, the Patriots turned the pressure up on South on defense, and used a strong inside game to make a steady parade to the freethrow line. For the game, Century shot 42 freethrows. As the second half wore on, the Bruins just couldn't seem to find the range on offense, struggling to only 7 points in the first ten minutes of play after halftime, and the Patriots led by a 51-37 margin midway through the half. South could never get enough momentum to close the gap, and Century held on for the comfortable 21 point win. South was led in scoring and rebounding by Mandy Hage, whe had 12 and 6 respectively. Katie Thorson also had 12 for South, and Kirsten Pattison added 10. South drops to 0-1 on the season and plays Bismarck High on Saturday at the Civic.
