Bruins end season with 82-67 loss to Bismarck
It was a case of too many freethrows and too many fastbreak layups for the Bismarck Demons, as the Bruins ended their 2007 season with an 82-67 loss at the hands of the team who finished ranked #2 in the Class A Poll. The Bruins played a solid first 8 minutes of the game, causing some problems with their full court pressure and playing the style of play they wanted to, but then ran into a stretch where they couldn't put the ball in the basket, and the Demons capitalized on their effective transition game to get behind the Bruin defense for a series of easy baskets. South couldn't keep track of Liz wamsley, who dropped in 17 first half points for Bismarck, many coming on fast break layups. With their transition game in high gear, the Demons were able to pull away late in the half by rolling up 49 first half points to take a 49-33 lead at halftime. In the second, the Bruins tried to mount a comeback. The Bruins scored the first 2 possessions of the second half to make it 49-37, and kept the game within reach. Caitlyn Haring and Mandy Hage sparked the Bruins second half effort, as Haring had a pair of steals that led to hoops, and Hage hit a three pointer, South's first of the tournament, to get the lead to under double figures. The Bruins crept even closer, and trailed by just a 60-53 score midway through the period. The Bruins then went into an offensive lull, and Bismarck was able to stretch the lead back out to double figures, and South didn't have enough gas in the tank to mount another comeback. The Demons finished strong and came away with the 15 point win. South was led by Amy Stroup and Katie Thorson, each with 12 points, joined in double figures by Caitlyn Haring with 10. Kristen Anstadt led South in rebounding for the second straight night with 8 boards. The loss gives the Bruins a final record of 16-8.
