Bruins get home victory over Red River

Fargo South used a workman's like effort and withstood some hot shooting in the second half by the Rough Riders, and came away with a 66-55 win in the Bruins gym on Tuesday night. The Bruins jumped out to an early 6-0 lead, as Kirsten Pattison scored inside for South, then Katie Thorson hit a pair of hoops, one on a beautiful pass in transition from Amy Stroup. South extended that lead to 16-7 on a Janna Deyle bucket on a nice hi-low pass from Kirsten Pattison. The Bruins got another nice spark off the bench as Mallory Kumm came in and hit a long two pointer and a three pointer in close succession to help South take a 27-17 halftime lead. Alicia Stensgard led South with 8 points at halftime, but that was matched by the Riders Katie Johnke who also had 8. As the first half played out as a defensive battle, both teams found their offensive groove in the second half. In the opening minutes the Bruins built up their lead, and a Mandy Hage three pointer made it a 17 point lead at 42-25 and South looked to be in control. The lead hovered at that range when the Riders started to knock down shots and crash the offensive glass for putback baskets. Holly Asche scored all 9 of her points seemingly in a row during one stretch where she scored from the lane on post ups and putbacks, and Andi Wheeler knocked down 3 three pointers, the last coming with 3:41 to play, cutting the lead to 59-52. The Bruins were able to hold of the Riders though as Amy Stroup and Kristen Anstadt hit from the freethrow line, and Katie Thorson scored on a fastbreak layup, and South hung on for the final 66-55 margin. The win moves South to 8-4 overall, but more importantly to 7-1 in the EDC, where they remain 1 game behind Shanley. Ali Stensgard and Katie Thorson were the only 2 Bruins in double figures, with 12 and 10 points respectively. Next action for the Bruins is on Friday night when they travel to Valley City in a 2 point conference game.
