Bruins outscore Spartans

Fargo South put 5 different players in double figures scoring busted out of some 10 day rust, to outscore their crosstown rivals 82-65 on Friday night in the Spartandome. Both teams put together some nice stretches of basketball early, and although the Bruins built a lead at 20-13, the Spartans scored the next 6 points to make it a tight 20-19 game midway through the half. Early on, Caitlyn Haring was active, making some nice offensive and defensive plays to spark the Bruins to that early lead, but foul trouble then forced her to sit out the last ten minutes of the half. After North cut the South lead to just one, Kirsten Pattison began to take over inside. The senior post scored inside on three of the next four possessions to give the Bruins some breathing room again. At halftime, the Bruins had built the lead back up to a 36-24 score. In the second half though, both teams got their offenses in high gear, as in the half the Bruins outscored the Spartans 46-41. For South, it was a number of girls getting into the act. Siri Burck scored on some nice transition breaks and also got a nice offensive rebound basket off a missed freethrow, Katie Thorson was able to get deep into the lane for scoring opportunities, Caitlyn Haring cashed in at the line and also dished some nice passes, and Kirsten Pattison, Alicia Stensgard, and Kristen Anstadt all were able to get hoops inside. For the Spartans, it was the Jess Arechigo show. The senior point guard dropped in a game high 21 points on some nice driving baskets and freethrows, and when she wasn't scoring, she was distributing. With the defensive attention focused on stopping Arechigo, she was able to find her teammates, and Kaia Hanson was the main recipient, as she also dropped in 21 points. Although the Spartans did put together a nice run to pull to within six points with about 6 minutes left in the game, the Bruins were able to answer with a run of their own to slowly pull away from North down the stretch. Kirsten Pattison scored a team high 17 points and grabbed 15 rebounds, and Siri Burck was close behind with a season high 16 points. The win moves the Bruins to 11-3 in the EDC and 11-6 overall. Next action for South is next Tuesday when they host Grand Forks Central.
