South continues strong play
Fargo South put together a very solid 36 minutes of basketball on Tuesday night in Grand Forks and pulled away in the second half for a 72-50 win over the Rough Riders to move to 7-0 in the EDC and maintain their lead in the conference. Both teams came out ready to compete in the opening half as Andi Wheeler hit a three pointer on the opening possession for the Riders, but that was answered by a three pointer by freshman Meghan Roehrich, who ended up leading all scorers with 14 points. The other 4 starters each made a basket over the next four minutes as the Bruins built a slim 14-10 lead. The Bruins defensive pressure was key in both halves for South, as Siri Burck and Caitlyn Haring caused problems out on top of Souths full and half court traps. Amy Stroup continued her strong overall play and led South to a 29-26 halftime lead. In the second half, the Bruins hit a double figure lead for the first time at 38-28 on a great fast break from Caitlyn Haring to Katie Lee. After the Riders cut the gap to 42-38, the Bruins then went on a big run to pull away. A 9-0 run hi-lited by a Siri Burck three pointer, then followed that up a short time later with a 12-4 run in which Meghan Roehrich hit a pair of three pointers, including one shot clock buzzer beater, to make the score 63-45, and the Bruins managed the rest of the game to post the win. South put 5 different players in double figures. South is 8-3 overall and plays again Thursday when they host Valley City in a 2 point EDC game.
