Second half drought spells doom for Bruins
Fargo South turned from Dr. Jekyl to Mr. Hyde on Friday night at Blue Jay Arena in Jamestown and dropped a low scoring 46-43 decision to the Jays. After jumping out to a big first half lead, the Bruins could not close out the first half correctly, and could not find a way to put points on the board in the second half, and fell to the #2 ranked team because of it. South managed only 2 points in the opening 9 minutes of the second half, allowing Jamestown to come all the way back from a 15 point deficit to tie the game at 32-32. A Meghan Roehrich driving basket gave the lead back to South at 34-32, but that was quickly erased as Morgan Dale knocked down a three pointer with just under 7 minutes to play, giving the Jays their first lead of the game at 35-34. South would not regain the lead again as they would not score again until a Siri Burck three pointer with under 5 minutes to play. The 16 minute stretch of only scoring 4 points from the 2 minute mark of the first half until 4 minutes of the second half proved to be the undoing of the Bruins chances to win the game. Early on in the game though, it looked as though the Bruins would continue their solid play from the previous night. The Bruins were able to control the tempo of the game, score inside, and defend the Blue Jays stars, and ran up a 15-2 lead to start the game. The Bruins looked to be in control throughout the half, but leading 30-15 with 2 minutes to play in the half and having possession of the ball, the Bruins turned it over twice, failed to box out on a freethrow attempt and gave up a three pointer to the Jays on the ensuing possession, again turned the ball over with 30 seconds to play which allowed the Jays to make a last second shot before halftime, cutting the lead to 30-20, but more importantly, gave Jamestown momentum and confidence heading into the lockerroom. One bright spot for South in the second half was the play of freshman guard Meghan Roehrich though. Meghan had a tough driving layup, made a three pointer, got to the freethrow line, and had an offensive rebound all in short order in the closing part of the game, helping to keep the Bruins in it. The loss drops South to 4-2 overall. The Bruins are now off until December 28 when they play cross-town rival Fargo North.
