South takes 3rd place at State
With a teammate down and on her way to the hospital, the Fargo South Bruins used that emotion to run past Shanley, completing the 4 game season sweep of the Deacons, and take home third place in the State Tournament. After starting down 2-0, South's Caitlyn Haring had back to back baskets to give the Bruins a 4-2 lead, and on the ensuing possession, less than 4 minutes into the game, Meghan Roehrich had a steal and was heading in for a layup, when she was fouled hard on the attempt and ended up in the hospital with a pair of broken bones in her wrist. After that play, the Bruins seemed energized to rally around their teammate, and cranked up their defensive pressure, scoring 10 straight points to lead 14-2. South held the Deacons scoreless for nearly 7 minutes in that run to take control of the game. The lead hovered at that 10 point range for most of the remainder of the half, until Caitlyn Haring ended the half the way she began it - with back to back hoops to give South a 32-18 lead at halftime. After a Shanley basket to begin the second half made it 32-20, the Bruins then scored on a three point play by Kristen Anstadt and a three pointer by Katie Lee and with just over a minute gone by had their biggest lead of the game at 38-20. Molly Brenner countered with a pair of three pointers back to back to get Shanley close again, but the Bruins had the answers to any Deacon comeback attempt on this night. Caitlyn Haring had another hoop to disrupt any Shanley momentum, and Katie Lee also had big baskets to keep the lead in double figures. Amy Stroup's driving basket gave South a 44-31 lead with under 7 minutes to play and the Bruins were not challenged after that. Siri Burck did her usual great job of making it difficult for the opponents guards to get anything done offensively, while Caitlyn Haring had her second straight "double-double" with 12 points and 14 rebounds. The win gives South a 21-4 record on the year which included an EDC regular season title and the East Region Championship. South graduates 3 seniors from this year's team, all of whom will be greatly missed!
