Bruins cap off perfect EDC season with win over Packers

Playing with the pressure of going 16-0 in the EDC for only the second time in school history, the Fargo South Bruins defeated a very scrappy and physical West Fargo team in the Packer gym on Thursday night 65-41. Both teams fought toe to toe for the first half of the opening half even though South got out to a quick 5-0 lead. West Fargo battled back and kept it within two or three points for the next 10 minutes of play, in large part to their tough defensive effort. However, from that point on, the Bruins stepped up to the challenge, holding the Packers without a field goal for the remainder of the half, and went on a 20-0 run. The Bruins scored both inside with Amy Stroup, and outside as Siri Burck hit a three pointer, and in transition, scoring on some beautiful passing by Caitlyn Haring. The run led South to a 39-18 halftime lead and put them in great position to secure the win. The Packers were not going to give in though. After South scored the first 2 hoops of the second half by Amy Stroup and a nice driving basket by Meghan Roehrich to push the lead to 43-18, West Fargo went on a 9-2 run to keep the Bruins within shouting distance at 45-28, but another late run by the Bruins pushed the lead out to its largest of the game at 61-33 with just over 2 minutes to play, and South was on its way to their 16th win of the season. Amy Stroup led South with 14 points. The Bruins finish the season 16-0 in the EDC, and 16-3 overall. The Bruins will play the winner of the play in game between Wahpeton and Valley City next Thursday in the opening game of the East Region tournament at the Alerus Center in Grand Forks.
