Bruins win East Region for 4th straight year
Fargo South kept their winning streak going, and the result was a 4-peat in the East Region Tournament and their 5th title in the last 6 years. Playing in front of a big tournament crowd, the Bruins uncharacteristically got out to a somewhat slow start, but once they settled into the game, the running game got going and South pulled away from the scrappy Firebirds en route to a 72-41 win. Early on it was Devils Lake who was the aggresor, jumping out to an 8-4 lead, with 4 different Firebirds making field goals. But the Bruins answered with a 15-0 run which included some nice fast break baskets and a three pointer by Meghan Roehrich. That gave South a 19-8 lead, and that lead hovered at about 10 points until the Bruins went on another run, this time a 9-0 run that pushed the Bruins lead to 32-15 with just under 3 minutes left in the half. That run was very important, as the Bruins were battling foul trouble the entire half, and got a huge spark off the bench from Raquel Wellentin, who made a pair of baskets in that run. The Bruins took a 35-18 lead into halftime. In the second half, South got its running game going in high gear. The Bruins ran the floor hard and had a number of beautiful pass aheads for transition baskets. A 5 minutes stretch midway through the half really put the game out of reach, as Siri Burck scored 6 stright points as part of a 10-0 run to stretch the lead out to 60-31. Caitlyn Haring, who was later named Senior Player of the Year, was seemingly everywhere, and finished with nearly a triple-double, with 10 points, 11 rebounds, and 8 assists. Siri Burck was on the receiving end of many of those fast break baskets, and finished with a game high 19 points. It was a night of many rewards for Fargo South. All five starters were named unanimous All-Conference, Caitlyn Haring was Player of the Year, and Craig Flaagan was named as EDC Coach of the Year. The win moves South to 22-0, and sets up a first round State Tournament game with Jamestown at 1 PM next Thursday.
