Bruins get overtime win

In a game that had a biggest lead of 6 points either way, the Fargo South Bruins made enough plays down the stretch to overcome a very tough Devils Lake team and posted a 57-56 overtime win on the road on Thursday night. The Bruins scored off the opening tip play on a nice pass from Brittney Bolstad to Katie Felch, but the Firebirds came down and answered off an offensive rebound putback, and it was game on. Both teams made nice plays throughout the half. Erica Everson provided a spark off the bench for South as she had 3 nice inside baskets to help South take a 22-21 halftime lead. In the second half, both teams again had some important plays to keep the game tight. Lauryn Wilson hit 2 important outside shots, including one from three point land. Amanda Schultz hit a three pointer and also had some nice passes for assists to Raquel Wellentin underneath and it looked like the Bruins were just a play or two away from locking up the game when one of those Wellentin hoops gave South a 42-36 lead with under 5 minutes to play. Devils Lake kept crashing the boards hard though and cut the lead to 44-41. South again appeared to have the game in hand when Brittney Bolstad hit a huge three pointer from the right wing to give South a 47-41 lead with just over 2 minutes to play. South turned the ball over twice in succession though, and 3 Devils Lake baskets later, the game was tied at 47-47. Raquel Wellentin scored inside with under a minute to play making it 49-47, but the Firebirds tied it up on an offensive rebound putback with 20 seconds to play. It appeared that Emily Livingood was going to get a chance to win the game in regulation as she made a nice drive to the basket with 5 seconds left, but despite what appeared to be a lot of contact on the shot attempt, no call was made and the game went into overtime. In the overtime period, it looked like the Firebirds had the upper hand. After trading hoops, the Firebirds hit a three pointer to go up 54-51 with just over 2 minutes remaining to take control, but the Bruins hung tough. Raquel Wellentin made a hoop off a nice pass from Amanda Schultz to make it 54-53, and after a defensive stop, Katie Felch made a tough shot from the left wing to give South a 55-54 lead. Devils Lake scored again on an offensive rebound basket to retake the lead 56-55, and this time it was Jasmine Moffett who came up big for South, hitting a left baseline shot to give South a 57-56 lead with under a minute to play. Then it was Brittney Bolstad's turn to make things happen. Brittney stole a pass on one possession, and grabbed a huge rebound off a Devils Lake missed shot attempt with 8 seconds left to secure the win for the Bruins. In a total team effort, the Bruins improved to 12-1 in the EDC and 13-3 overall. Raquel Wellentin paced South with 14 points and 13 rebounds, while Amanda Schultz dished out 8 assists. Next action for South is Friday when they play cross town rival Fargo North.
