Bruins get first ever win over Moorhead
Fargo South got a giant monkey off its back on Friday night, dominating the Moorhead Spuds in a 78-45 victory in the Moorhead gym, claiming their first ever win against the Minnesota school. After a sluggish start in which the Spuds took an 11-5 lead, the Bruins kicked their defense into high gear, forcing 36 Moorhead turnovers and basically pressuring the ball so much the Spuds had difficulty running any semblance of an offense. The Bruins controlled nearly every aspect of the game, getting nearly double the amount of field goal attempts, outrebounded the Spuds, and made more free throws than Moorhead attempted. Siri Burck and Caitlyn Haring were seemingly everywhere on the defensive side of things in the first half. With Siri on the point of the Bruins full and half court trapping sets, her tall frame and long arms caused all kinds of problems for the Spuds. At halftime, the tipped passes by Burck led directly to 7 steals for Haring, and another 5 by Meghan Roehrich. South had 17 steals at halftime. About the only thing that wasn't clicking for the Bruins was they just couldn't seem to buy an inside basket. South shot only 36% in the half, but still managed to build a 30-20 halftime lead. In the second half, the Bruins continued their tough defensive pressure. Meghan Roehrich followed a missed freethrow with an offensive rebound putback, Katie Lee hit a midrange jumper, and Siri Burck's steal led to a Caitlyn Haring layup gave South a 36-20 lead, and never looked back after that. The Bruins continued to widen the lead as Alley Fisher found her shooting touch, hitting a pair of 3 pointers on her way to 12 second half points. All-Stater Caitlyn Haring played like it in this game as she once again played a fantastic all around game. Haring led all players with 19 points, 9 steals, 8 rebounds, and 6 assists. Haring was joined in double figures by Siri Burck with 16, Alley Fisher with 13, and Meghan Roehrich with 10. South moves to 9-0 on the season. Next action for South is Tuesday, when they make their second trip to Grand Forks, playing at the 2nd place Central Knights.
