Bruins beat Pats in early matchup of top two teams

#2 ranked Fargo South opened up the 2009-10 basketball season with a tough job: go into the #1 ranked team's home gym and try to get a season opening win. In typical "first game" style, the Bruins accomplished just that, taking a 58-50 victory over Bismarck Century on Friday night in the Patriots gym. Being the season opener for both teams, the game was about what was expected, with some good plays mixed in with some sloppy plays. The Bruins hit 3 three-pointers in the first half, by 3 different players, to help South to a 28-23 halftime lead. In the opening half, Alley Fisher had the hot hand, dropping in 12 first half points to pace both teams. And while the Bruins had a number of positive plays, they also turned the ball over 14 times and shot only 5 of 12 from the freethrow line. In the second half, the teams traded baskets early, and South had a 31-25 lead, but a 7-0 run by the Bruins over the next 3 minutes of play helped stretch the lead and give the Bruins some breathing room. A great drive and dish by Meghan Roehrich to Jasmine Moffett and an offensive putback by Siri Burck helped spark South to a 38-25 lead with just under 12 minutes left. The Patriots were not going to give in easily though. With 8 minutes left and South leading 43-31, the Pats went on a quick 8-0 run thanks to a pair of three pointers to cut the lead to 43-39 with 6 minutes remaining and got their home crowd back into the game. The Bruins showed why they are going to be a tough team this year as well though and responded to the run that Century made. A driving basket by Katie Felch and a tough inside basket by Siri Burck staked the Bruins to a 49-45 lead and then Alley Fisher hit a huge three pointer with just under three minutes to play to give South more breathing room at 52-45. The Bruins then played smart, steady basketball down the stretch, and made 6 of 6 freethrows in the last minute to secure the 58-50 win. Alley Fisher led all scorers with 21 points, while Siri Burck added 16, and Meghan Roehrich chipped in with 10 points and 10 rebounds. The Bruins move to 1-0 on the season and take on Bismarck High on Saturday afternoon.
