Bruins drop title game game for 2nd year in a row

The season ended up the same way it began...with Bismarck Century holding the #1 spot and Fargo South the #2 spot. For the second year in a row and for the 4th time in the last 7 years, the Bruins found themselves the bridesmaid again in the race for the schools 4th State Championship. It marked the end of an incredible season which saw some amazing happenings, and the end of 2 girls' careers as Bruins, Erica Everson playing her first year of varsity basketball, and Siri Burck, playing her 4th. The Championship game proved to be a dogfight, as the Bruins struggled to score points all night long against the tough man defense of the Patriots. Both teams played evenly early on as Meghan Roehrich scored 7 of the Bruins first 9 points to help South build an 11-10 lead 4 minutes into the game. Century scored the next 7 points however, and gave themselves some breathing room at 17-11 halfway through the opening half as the Bruins just could not get anything going offensively. They hung in there though as Raquel Wellentin made a nice inside basket and Katie Felch scored on a runner through the lane to cut the lead to 17-15, but then the Patriots went on another run, this time 9-0, to make it 26-15 and give the Pats their first double figure lead. South responded as Meghan scored 5 straight points, including a three point play and shortly after Siri Burck also made a tough shot and was fouled for another three point play. At halftime, the Bruins had clawed their way back into the game and trailed just 30-26 at halftime. In the second half it appeared the Bruins had finally gotten on track. South started the half on a 9-2 run to take a 35-32 lead after a Siri Burck steal and pass ahead for a Meghan Roehrich layup. But that would be the end of the good vibes for the Bruins. Century responded with a 16-0 run, sparked by sophomore Alexis Jacobs who scored 8 straight points in that run to give the Patriots the lead for good at 48-35 with 8 minutes remaining. South tried to stay close, at one point cutting the lead back to single digits at 54-46, but the Bruins could get no closer. The teams traded points down the stretch, and Century came away with the 60-50 title game victory. South got 21 points from Meghan Roehrich and 20 from Siri Burck, but Raquel Wellentin was the only other Bruin to score more than 2 points, and she added 5. Despite the loss, the Bruins ended their season with some great memories. South had a 21-4 record, won the EDC tournament for the 5th year in a row, saw both Meghan and Siri break the all time school scoring record of 1104 points, and in one incredible game, saw 2 players, Meghan and Siri, both score their 1000th point on the same night, and in so doing, Meghan shattering her own school record with 39 points in that game.
